SPRING 2023

Another GREAT event for the WNC High School Disc Golf League!
Wednesday at Charles D. Owen High School we saw 29(!) golfers brave the wet and muddy conditions to compete in the first event of the spring 2023 season. It ended up being a great day of play thanks to everybody involved.
If anybody has pictures or videos that they want to share, we’d love to post them on our website/socials!
Most importantly, thanks to the 29 players from SEVEN different schools (Owen HS, Enka High School , West Henderson High, FernLeaf Community Charter School, Christ School, North Buncombe HS, and McDowell Early College) for coming out to meet and compete with your peers. We saw new players in every division with hopefully even more to come.
Thank you to all the volunteers, teachers, coaches, parents, and anybody who shared their time with us on Wednesday. Your support means the world.
Next we need to thank all of our league and event sponsors: MVP Disc Sports fan page was contacted as soon as the league was taking shape and they have been a great partner since.
The WNCDGA is always there to help maintain the courses, support the league in a ton of ways, and provide volunteers and prizes. We truly couldn’t do it without the board and members’ continued support.
Throw Pink was so eager to provide discs, towels (very helpful yesterday), hats, and more to our female players and let me tell you the players were even more excited to get and throw them. Lots of pink was flying around the course yesterday with SIX(!!) competitors in the Throw Pink Girls Division.
Play It Again Sports - Asheville, NC is one of our newest sponsors, reaching out to provide a basket to give away at the end of the season. It was used quite a bit as a practice basket on Wednesday and will get plenty more use before the season is all said and done.
A special event sponsor for the event at Owen was Jimmy's On The River in Swannanoa! HUGE shoutout to Jimmy and the team for providing some fresh, hot, and delicious pizza for the kids to refuel a bit after their rounds. Virginia and I caught one glimpse of those pies and knew what we were doing for dinner so we grabbed one on the way home ourselves. Everybody go and support Jimmy! While I didn’t get any pictures of the kids eating (they inhaled it all too quickly!) I can promise it was enjoyed.
The full results from the event are published here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQXPTb0OYtewEYsxOouFWh3STd5ptjEXj0CloMEOaiio377o3aNMwdMECZ7xKNPY1e-xMD45gl8cpBB/pubhtml?gid=456893907&single=true
Shoutout to our top finishers in each division:
VARSITY DIVISION(18 players)
1 - Wilson Davis (Owen HS)
T2 - Zachary Rice (Enka HS)
T2 - Ben Hinchliffe (West Henderson HS)
THROW PINK GIRLS DIVISION (6 players)
1 - Norah Krumholz (Fern Leaf Charter)
2 - Aaliyah Silva (Owen HS)
JUNIOR VARSITY DIVISION (5 players)
1 - Luke Hall (Owen HS)
2 - Logan Stubbs (Fern Leaf Charter)
Our next event will be NEXT WEDNESDAY, 3/29, at North Buncombe HS. Teeing off as close to 4:15 as possible. All players welcome, no pre-registration required, FREE TO PLAY! Tell any high school aged players you know. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions at all.

Thank you all so much for helping us build something so special.

SPRING 2023 FORMAT CHANGES AND ANNOUCEMENTS:
Happy March! We play high school disc golf this month! Let's get it!
Here are seven annoucements and changes coming for the league this spring. Please reach out with any questions or comments!
The WNCHSDG League is extremely excited to sponsor a middle school event this season! May 3rd at Flat Rock Middle School. ALL middle school aged students who can make it are encouraged! Public/Charter/Private/Homeschool– doesn’t matter! Come one, come all!
Format details (layout, divisions, etc) and registration form (though pre-registration is NOT required, it is helpful for planning) coming in the weeks to follow. The number of high school events has increased from four in the fall season to six in the spring season. In the fall season there was no differentiation between any of the events (other than the last event taking place on a Saturday). This season all events are on Wednesdays, the first five events are considered the “regular season” and the final event will be the league championship. The schedule for the events can be found on the www.WNCHSDG.com website.
In the fall season, the league champion was determined by the overall points gaining player for each division. To more closely align the league with the structure of established North Carolina high school varsity sports, the official overall league champion will be the player who wins the season championship event at Jackson park on May 17th.
The league will also continue to recognize (as division “MVP”s) and award the players who accumulate the most points during the “regular season” events. (awards for both division MVPs and league champion in each division to be announced).During the fall season, points were accumulated according to the number of players that an individual finished higher than, regardless of division. In the spring, players will only collect points for the players that they finish higher than (or equal to) who are in the same division as they are. This is to align more closely to the PDGA points system and due to the new layout format (more below).
All regular season events will continue to consist of one round of 18 holes. When possible, players will be carded on cards of 3 for pace of play. Where cards of 4 are necessary, they should first be created to include advanced varsity players. Previously, all divisions played the same layout. In order to 1) increase pace of play on longer courses and 2) allow advanced players to play more challenging layouts, the varsity division will (when applicable and by the discretion of the event director) play separate layouts from the girls and/or junior varsity divisions.
The championship event will consist of 18 holes for all players, but the top 4 (plus ties) finishers from the varsity division will play a “final 6” holes. The cumulative total of each of those players’ 24 holes will determine the league champion.
The league is excited to announce (and extremely grateful for) continued partnerships with: MVP Disc Sports, Throw Pink Disc Golf, and the Western North Carolina Disc Golf Association throughout the spring 2023 season.
The league is also very happy to announce a new partnership for the spring 2023 season with Play it Again Sports Asheville, who is generously donating prizes for our league winners.
The league is in conversation with a media partner to have the top varsity card at the championship event filmed and produced for online distribution.

FALL 2022
Nov 27 2022
Hello everybody!
The final event of the fall season is one week away, and we're so excited to crown our fall champions in each division.
WNCDGA has graciously offered to cover up to $50 in tournament-entry fees for the overall season winners in each division! So our high schoolers can start showing off their skills at PDGA sanctioned events!
The details for next week are as follows:
DATE & TIME: Next SUNDAY (12/4). Players are asked to check in before 9am, and we will try to tee off by 9:30.
(knock on wood) the weather is looking like high 50s to low 60s, overcast, and a slight wind. Sounds like a great day for disc golf, but dress in layers!
FORMAT: (slight change!!) the morning round will be a SINGLES round. Players will play the 9 short holes and then the 9 long holes on the Christ School course.
Then there will be a lunch break (~1 hour) and then a BEST SHOT DOUBLES round.
The singles round will determine points towards the fall season champions in each division.
The doubles round will be played as "best shot" (aka "captains choice") doubles and players will compete for prizes and bragging rights!
For the doubles round, teams can compete in one of two divisions:
VARSITY (any two players regardless of gender or grade)
MIXED/GIRLS/JV (any team that consists of at least one girl, regardless of either player's grade OR a team of two girls regardless of grade OR a team of two boys who are both in 9th or 10th grade)
For the doubles round, players are not required to play with a partner that is from their school. Players who wish to participate in the doubles round but are without a partner will be partnered with another player before the start of the round.
LOCATION: Christ School.
Parking by the football field. You can follow this link: https://goo.gl/maps/ACLofVzPUsE62g5HA
I will have some snacks and drinks for players free of charge, but it is recommended that all players pack some kind of lunch or snack to eat between rounds in addition.
If you have any questions, please let me know! It's been a pleasure putting this season together, and as soon as the event is done, be on the lookout for information about the spring season!

Hello again!
As a reminder, event #3 is TOMORROW at the Black Mountain's Veterans Park.
We will try to start as close to 4:00 as we can, to avoid running into sunlight issues. The course plays pretty quickly, and we will be sure to have (mostly) cards of 3 to move quickly.
The first two events were great, and I'm looking forward to another awesome one tomorrow!
All the results and standings will continue to be posted at www.WNCHSDG.com
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

WNC High School Disc Golf League fall season event #2 is TOMORROW!
We will start the players meeting at 4:00 and tee off shortly after.
The event is being held at the brand new course over at East Henderson High School. The course starts at this location, which you can plug into your GPS:
35.29746900562292, -82.42507239274215
It is right beyond the left field wall of the baseball field.
The last event at North Buncombe went great, let's have another awesome one! In the past year of 5 events, this will be the first in Henderson county, which I am very excited about.
All the results and standings will continue to be posted at www.WNCHSDG.com
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Hey everybody!
If you are receiving this email, it is because you:
1 - Signed up for our 2022-2023 mailing list online
or
2 - I had your email from a high school event last year.
If you are receiving this because I have your email from an event last year, this will be the last email you get from me unless you sign up for the mailing list. I do not want to spam people for years and years after their kid graduates (etc).
If you want to continue getting updates about this year's league, please sign up for our mailing list at www.WNCHSDG.com (if you already have, you're good!)
This is just an email to say that our first event is LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY!!!!!!
This is so hugely exciting!
The round will start at 4:00 PM (or as close to 4 as we can) at North Buncombe High School. I expect the round to take around 2.5 hours.
Parents/ friends/ etc are welcome to come watch and/or follow a card, we just ask that you give the players space, and are quiet while they are playing. We will talk more about this before the start of play.
If you search "North Buncombe soccer fields" on google maps, it will take you right to the course parking lot. ( North Buncombe Soccer Fields, 100 Salem Hill Rd, Weaverville, NC 28787 )
The course has a pretty thick rough, and has been known to have a bit of thorns and/or poison ivy, so I might encourage players to wear long pants for their own comfort.
Players/schools do not need to pre-register or bring anything to the course. (Though I would recommend a water bottle!)
When players check in, they will give us their name, grade, school, and division. This year players can play in one of three divisions: Varsity (open to all), Junior Varsity (limited to 9-10th graders, if they want) and Girls (open to all female players-- graciously sponsored by throw pink disc golf!).
If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to respond to this email and I will answer or find the answer for you.
Pictures, standings, a schedule, and more on www.WNCHSDG.com
See y'all next Wednesday!
